SLEX Redevelopment

By admin • Mar 29th, 2008 • Category: Features

SLEX upgrading and rehabilitation project began last May 2006. The expressway will be developed similar to the already developed NLEX followed by connection of its Batangas section, STAR Tollway or the CALABARZON Expressway as what we Batangenyos call it.

Phase 1 of the project will be the widening of the old Alabang Viaduct (somewhere near the Alabang tollway), the rehabilitation and widening of Alabang-Calamba segment, construction of Calamba-Sto. Tomas segment, and integration of Skyway, SLEX, and Star Tollway as one. It just means that after this phase, it will be a wider South Luzon Expressway and a convenient driving from Lipa to Manila without taking the national roads.

Phase 2 will be the rehabilitation of the Sto. Tomas-Lipa segment or the STAR Tollway as of today and its extension to Batangas City. After this phase, it will be a more improved STAR or CALABARZON and new exits to Batangas City–and maybe even to the nearby towns like Ibaan and San Jose (just a guess).

Phase 3 is the construction of Sto Tomas-Lucena City segment.

Alabang Viaduct will be completed by March 2008, Alabang-Calamba segment is scheduled to be completed by April 2008, and Calamba-Sto. Tomas segment is said to be finished by December 2008. There is no info yet on when the Phase 2 and 3 will be completed but it is said the once the project is finished, the expressway will be similar to the modern Malaysian expressway (as Malaysia’s BHD is collaborating in this project) and the driving time from Manila to Port of Batangas will only take you one and a half hour.
